How to wash a synthetic wig?

Washing a synthetic wig is easy and low-maintenance, but it requires a specific approach to keep the fibers looking natural. Unlike human hair, synthetic fibers require specialized products; using standard drugstore shampoos can cause buildup, dull the color, and lead to permanent tangling.

When Should You Wash Your Synthetic Wig?

If you wear your wig daily, we recommend a "Weekly Wash Day." Consistent care prevents fibers from binding and twisting due to heat and friction.

Signs it’s time for a wash:

  • The hair feels dry or "crunchy" to the touch.

  • The fibers are tangling more easily than usual.

  • The style looks flat or lacks its original bounce.

SPARX Pro-Tip: To extend the time between washes, lightly mist your wig with water from a spray bottle. This helps relax the fibers and reduces friction.

Essential Supplies for Synthetic Wig Care

Before you begin, gather these specifically formulated tools:

  • Jon Renau Fiber Love Shampoo: Formulated specifically for synthetic fibers.

  • Petite Rubber Mannequin Head: Securely holds the wig’s shape without stretching the cap.

  • Wig Pins: Safer than T-pins; these won't snag the delicate cap or hair.

  • Flexible Wig Brush: Designed to detangle without causing shedding.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig: Step-by-Step

1. The Pre-Wash Brush

Using your wig brush or a wide-tooth comb, gently detangle the hair starting from the ends and moving upward. Never skip this step - brushing a wet synthetic wig can cause the fibers to stretch and frizz.

2. Protect the Cap

Flip your wig inside out. This prevents the water pressure from "inverting" the hair (pushing it through the cap), which can cause scalp itchiness and prevent the hair from laying flat.

3. Cleanse Gently

Synthetic wigs don't collect oils like biological hair, so a little shampoo goes a long way.

  • Rinse the wig in lukewarm water.

  • Massage 2–3 dollops of shampoo into your hands and apply to the hair and cap in a downward motion.

  • Rinse thoroughly.

4. Condition for Softness

Apply conditioner starting halfway down the hair shaft to the ends. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes to soften the fibers, then rinse with cold water.

Important: Keep conditioner away from the wig base/knots, as it can cause the hair to shed.

5. The Towel Dry

Wrap the wig gently in a towel. Massage in a downward motion for one minute to remove excess moisture. This is a great moment to reflect on your week and give thanks for the confidence your wig provides!

6. Set and Air Dry

Place the wig on your rubber mannequin head. Let it air dry for 45–60 minutes before touching it. Once damp, use your wig pins to secure it and use a teasing brush to "set" your part and direction.

Let the wig air-dry completely overnight.

7. Morning Prep

The best part of a synthetic wig? Nothing! Synthetic fibers have "style memory," meaning they return to their original shape once dry. Just shake, put it on, and go.
