Many people struggle with curling synthetic hair because they treat it like human hair. The secret? Synthetic fiber doesn't set while it’s hot—it sets as it cools. If you've been frustrated that your curls "fall out" immediately, it’s because the fiber didn't have time to lock into shape. While you can use a curling iron on heat-friendly wigs, the most professional, long-lasting results come from a method used by wig manufacturers: The Wig Oven Technique.
Can all synthetic wigs be curled?
No. Only heat-friendly synthetic wigs can handle heat tools or the oven method. Always check your wig's specs before starting!
The Supplies You’ll Need
-
Hot Rollers: Choose your size based on the look (1.5" for beachy waves, 1" for glamorous curls).
-
Petite Rubber Mannequin Head: To hold the shape without stretching the cap.
-
Sewing Pins: Better than T-pins for preventing snags.
-
Continuous Spray Water Bottle: To lightly mist the hair.
-
Kendra Blow Dry Spray: Provides protection without heavy buildup.
-
A Standard Kitchen Oven: Set to a low, controlled temperature.
Step-by-Step: The Professional "Oven Set" Method
1. Prep and Detangle
Secure your wig to the mannequin head using sewing pins. Brush thoroughly from the ends up to the top using a flexible wet brush to ensure there are no tangles before the heat is applied.
2. Smooth the Ends
If your synthetic ends feel "crunchy" or frizzy, lightly mist them with water and run a flat iron (at a low setting) over them. This "resets" the fiber so the curls come out smooth rather than frayed.
3. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 195°F (90°C).
Safety Note: This low temperature mimics a professional factory "wig oven." Do not exceed this temperature, as you risk melting the fibers.
4. Section and Mist
Working from the bottom to the top, take 1-inch sections of hair. Lightly mist each section with water and a bit of blow-dry spray. The moisture helps the heat penetrate the fiber evenly.
5. Wrap the Hot Rollers
Wrap 1/2-inch subsections around your hot rollers.
-
For Beachy Waves: Use 1.5" – 2" rollers.
-
For Glamorous Curls: Use 1" – 1.25" rollers.
-
For Tight Curls: Use 3/4" rollers.
6. The "Bake"
Place the entire mannequin head (ensure it is a heat-safe rubber or canvas head) with the pinned wig and rollers into the oven. Leave it for one hour. The Crucial Cool-Down Remove the wig from the oven, but do not touch the rollers. To lock in the style, the fiber must cool completely. We recommend letting it set overnight.
8. The Reveal
In the morning, remove the rollers. You’ll be left with bouncy, permanent curls that stay until the next time you apply heat!
